Last fall, the University of Oregon invited community members to submit proposals to use materials salvaged from Hayward Field. The Springfield Community Development Corporation was thrilled to submit a proposal that was approved to receive Hayward Field East Grandstand Timbers. As home of TrackTown USA, we feel that continuing to tell the story of our history in track is incredibly important, and with the chance to tell that story in what we hope to be the future indoor track, sports, and event center, with materials left from one of the most historic track facilities (the original Hayward Field) we could not think of a better way to show the heart and soul that is track and field in Eugene and Springfield.
If the pure magic that these beams store within their history isn’t enough to make this story inspiring, the team effort that it took to relocate and store these materials is sure to do so. We could not have done this without the generous help from Chambers Construction, who was there to help our group every step of the way in moving the beams, Pape Material Handling for donating the forklift, Wildish Construction for donating trucking, and of course to Willamalane for providing storage for the materials. SCDC sends a huge thank you to everyone who lent a hand in this effort.
